Would you say yes to a proposal in a palace?
Well, Maya did, even though she was not expecting it! I mean, I’m sure she was expecting to say yes when the time came. She just didn’t know that the time was about to arrive pretty soon!
When Geoff reached out he already knew he wanted to propose to the love of his life: sweet Maya. He just wasn’t sure what would be the best plan. Logistics are always a bit tricky when you’re planning such an important moment from across the ocean which is why it is so important to choose the right people to help you out so you can actually enjoy the moment, not just manage it.
So, how did I ensured their Sintra Proposal would be all about them and the moment, not just about pretty pictures?
How a Surprise Sintra Proposal Photoshoot Became a Romantic and Intentional Experience Instead
Step 1: choosing the right location for your surprise proposal
To transform a standard proposal photoshoot into an intentional and immersive experience, it is of the utmost importance that my couples feel honored, respected and relaxed during their experience and Geoffrey and Maya were not exceptions.
They didn’t have any special requests when it came to location but Geoffrey was pretty confident that Sintra would be the perfect set for such an intimate and romantic moment which I couldn’t agree more. But where, exactly, in Sintra? We explored some different option with each having it’s onw perks:
Option 1 was ok but not exactly the most iconic;
Option 2 one of the most iconic options but due to being usually overcrowded provided little to no privacy nor even a true relaxed ambiance which was something Geoff really wanted;
Geoff did not want strangers to be an audience of such an intimate moment nor to have that moment interrupted by “congratulations” screams so he went with option 3 which offered the desired privacy with the iconic touch of option 2: Monserrate Palace
Why does your Sintra surprise proposal route and location matter so much?
Both the chosen location and route are important because it will define the entire energy of the experience. Not only that, it will determine how comfortable you’ll feel throughout the entire time which will have a major direct impact in everything else. If you feel constantly hyperaware and uncomfortable not only the images will come out unnatural but, most importantly, you’ll have a crappy experience from start to finish which is something I simply can’t accept!
Not all couples are the same, which is why I invest so much of my time and energy getting to know you beforehand. Otherwise, I won’t be able to recommend you the best location and route options for your specific personalities.
Step 2: intentional conversation starters to foster intimacy and romance
Intimacy (noun):
a state of close, personal, and familiar association with another person, characterized by feelings of emotional closeness, connection, and support.
Geoffrey and Maya are both high-achieving individuals with demanding careers. Maybe you can relate to that, and if so, you know this combination often means that you live extremely busy lives where time and energy to dive deeper into your relationship on a daily basis might not be as much as you wished it was.
Acknowledging that is important because it helps me wave in some elements throughout the entire experience that will help build the momentum for you to pop the big question. I do that by bringing with me thoughtful questions to ask during your proposal experience. These prompts have some essential specificities that transforme them from broad conversation starters into moments of deeper connection:
they are not to be answered to me but rather between you and your partner;
every question is based on your personalities and relationship dynamics (assessed during your pre-experience onboarding process);
some questions are designed to be answered by both of you while others are carefully thought to be mainly answered by one of the parts.
What’s the main goal of these conversation starters?
Your Sintra proposal should be a moment fully charged with intention, connection and romance. These prompts are an easy-going way to achieve all that. They allow you to forget about the world around you and create a universe of your own, immersing yourselves into the present moment you are sharing.
The most profound memories of Maya and Geoffrey's proposal experience happened precisely as consequences to those thoughtful conversation starters.
Step 3: hands-on curated exercises to deepen connection during your surprise proposal
This is probably the part I love the most about these experiences. It is amazing to plan every detail of it and even more amazing to watch my couples bloom while putting it into practice.
Ever since I’ve started to design these hands-on exercises, I’ve been noticing how much depth, intention and connection they bring to the overall experience. It is as watching a weight being lifted from my couples shoulders. As if, all of a sudden, their shyness and self-consciousness disappeared and they completely surrender to the moment and, above all, to each other. As a beautiful flower, blooming.
For Geoffrey and Maya it became obvious that this shared activity provided them a feeling of connection and safety that although were already there, solidified in that moment.
Why a written exercise during your Sintra proposal?
Many of my couples are, as I am, introverts. And even when they are not, being in front of a camera can be quite challenging in itself, let alone explore intimacy while being photographed.
A written exercise allows you to be 100% honest and raw without fear of being judged (by me or someone else). It also protects your privacy which provides you a safe opportunity to simply express your deepest emotions and thoughts, freely.
In a surprise proposal this is especially important. In this case, it offered Geoffrey a moment to ground himself before popping the question and acted as the perfect cue to actually propose. The atmosphere this simple exercise created was so emotionally charged that it provided the perfect romantic and intimate ambiance to ask the question that would change their lives.
After you finish the exercise, I’ll invite you to either read it aloud to each other or take turns reading each other’s words, silently. I’ll also leave it to you to choose if you prefer to exchange your letters afterwards, when your are both alone. I may facilitate the moment but it is entirely yours to live it. You have total control over it.
There’s also no time limit for this moment. The goal is for you to take the most out of it and that can’t happen if there’s a clock ticking over your head. For Geoffrey and Maya I actually prepared a mini pic-nic with some traditional treats and a blanket by a lake so this moment took a good part of their experience. After all, connection can not be rushed.
Maya and Geoffrey decided to read each other’s letters out loud so I kept my distance. This was a moment solely theirs. Deep. Raw. Intimate. And even from afar, their love felt almost touchable. Of course I took some images to immortalize the moment but I retrieved myself both during the exercise and afterwards, keeping my distance and allowing them to just be. Together.
Being a facilitator of intimate relationships is knowing when to be present and when to retrieve myself from the space so you can immerse yourselves in the moment, fully.
Step 4: adding a pinch of culture into your Sintra surprise proposal
Most of my beloved humans are from abroad so I always like to offer some traditional treats to make this experience even more immersive. After all, Portugal is well known for its cuisine, it only makes sense that food is also part of the experience.
This not only allow you to taste a bit of Portugal but also ensures that those 2+ hours were indeed well spent: you saw Portugal, tasted Portugal and experienced Portugal whilst living an unforgettable and unmatched romantic proposal. Nothing was left behind.
Besides, who doesn’t fancy a sweet, am I right?
In the end, Maya and Geoffrey didn’t return home with just pretty pictures and a new ring in her finger but also with new memories worth remember, an experience that changed their communication and connection, new information and tools that they can now use for the rest of their lives when balancing their demanding careers with their eagerness to spend quality, meaningful and intentional time together.
These images will forever remind them of a chapter of their lives worth revisiting, over and over again. And one day will be their legacy, the images that they can use to tell their children and grandchildren all about that special day when dad proposed in a palace in Sintra and a new joyful adventure began.
