The Silvas are one of “my” families. I’ve been privileged enough to capture their story through time, from João and Daniela’s engagement to the moment they became a family of 3 and now to a Christmas of their own.

An at-home photoshoot is quite an unique experience. It offers an intimacy and comfort that one can not accomplish anywhere else. It’s known, it’s cozy, it’s a family’s capsule in itself. Your home tells a lot about you and your family. There are snippets of your personalities scattered around the house, each corner tells a story, memories can be found displayed in the walls and shelves, all your favorite things gathered in one place, the books you read, the teacups your drink from, that blanket that it’s old but still so warm and special you can’t just trade it for a brand new one.

So when the Silvas reached out for a winter photoshoot I immediately suggested their own warm, comfy home and they warmly welcomed me into their safe haven.

Among laughter, dancing and a cup of tea, there was love, appreciation and a complete presence. They knew how precious those little moments were. How precious they all are. When I asked João what he feared the most as a parent he answered “knowing that just a month from now Joana will not be like this anymore. She will learn how to properly speak the words that right now she struggles to say but that I love how she pronounces it. She will grow and I can’t do anything to prevent that from happening.”

That’s why we capture everything nowadays isn’t it? Because we don’t want to forget. We want to be able to revisit memories, moments, people, places. We want to hold on to memories as tight as we can because life is just too unpredictable and our memory is not always sharp.

So these are the Silvas. This is João. This is Daniela. This is baby Joana. And these are some of their memories. A snippet of their essence, their love, their dynamic as a family of 3, captured as the artwork it truly is.
